Transition Assistance Program (TAP)

The Transition Assistance Program helps service members prepare for civilian life by covering career planning, education, benefits, and financial readiness before separation.

What Is the Transition Assistance Program?

The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is a mandatory program for most separating service members. It provides information, tools, and training to help you successfully transition from military service to civilian employment, education, or entrepreneurship.

What TAP Covers

Employment Readiness

Resume building, job search strategies, and interview preparation.

Education & Training

College options, GI Bill benefits, certifications, and apprenticeships.

VA Benefits Overview

Disability compensation, health care, housing, and education benefits.

Financial Planning

Budgeting, retirement planning, and post-service financial readiness.

When to Start TAP

1

18–24 months before separation (recommended): Begin planning and gathering information.

2

12 months before separation: Attend TAP workshops and counseling sessions.

3

6 months before separation: Finalize career, education, or business plans.

4

Post-separation: Continue using VA and DoD transition resources.

Choose the Right TAP Track

Employment Track

For service members pursuing civilian employment.

Education Track

For those planning to attend college or training programs.

Entrepreneurship Track

For veterans interested in starting or buying a business.

More Transition Resources

TAP is the starting point — not the finish line. Veterans who continue learning about benefits, career planning, and education options are better positioned for long-term success after service.

Active Civilian is not affiliated with the Department of Defense or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. We provide educational resources to help service members and veterans navigate transition programs and benefits.
